Understanding placeholders

What a placeholder does

A placeholder is a piece of text in a template that ClinyPal fills in automatically with the real detail when the message, letter, or invoice is actually generated — so you write the template once, and it works correctly for every patient and every appointment.

Where placeholders come from

Group	Fills in with
Appointment	The specific appointment's date, time, type, and location.
Patient	The patient's name, contact details, and other record fields.
Practitioner	The practitioner's name and details.
Business	Your clinic's name, address, and contact details.
Invoice	Invoice-specific figures, like totals and due dates.
General	Broader, non-appointment-specific details, used mainly for broadcasts.

Using them in a template

Select a placeholder from the list next to any template editor to insert it at your cursor. Which groups are available depends on what the template is for — an broadcast, for example, only offers Patient, Business, and General, since it isn't tied to a specific appointment.

If a placeholder shows up blank

It reflects what's actually on the record A placeholder that comes out empty usually means the underlying field — a patient's preferred name, for example — isn't filled in on their record. Fill in the source field rather than editing the placeholder itself.
